この作品は、沖縄県公文書館に所蔵されている一枚の捕虜の写真を起点としている。写真の中で首を垂れ、頭に手を置いて顔を隠すその人物は、日本軍の捕虜であること以外に、国籍や状況の詳細はわからない。その姿は、当時の「生きて虜囚の辱を受けず」という思想のもとで捕虜となった自らを恥じているのか、あるいは単に疲労しているだけなのかもしれない。実際の心境は知り得ないが、私には記録に残されたくないという存在を守るためのポーズのように見えた。
80年後のいま、私は米軍によって撮影されたその写真を、簡単に目にすることができる。その事実が持つ危うさを考え、映像ではあえて写真を直接は提示せず、その姿勢を模倣し続けた。映像内で沖縄県内の捕虜収容所跡地を巡り、トランポリンで跳躍した最高到達点で写真の捕虜の姿勢をとろうと試みる。写真が撮影された場所は特定できないが、だからこそ、かつて捕虜がいたかもしれないすべて場所で跳ぶことで、彼が座っていたかもしれない場所と一瞬重なり合えるのではないかと考えた。

This exhibition begins with a single photograph of a prisoner of war from the Okinawa Prefectural Archives.
In the photo, the man lowers his head and puts his hand on it, hiding his face. We only know he was a Japanese army prisoner, but not his nationality or other details. His pose might show shame under the wartime belief of “not living in disgrace as a prisoner,” or it might simply show exhaustion. We cannot know his real feelings, but to me, it looked like a gesture to protect himself, not wanting to be recorded.
Eighty years later, I can now easily see this photograph taken by the U.S. military. Thinking about the danger in that fact, I chose not to show the photo directly in the exhibition, but to create a video work instead. In the video, I visit former prisoner-of-war camp sites, jump on a trampoline, and at the highest point of the jump, try to take the same posture as the man in the photo. The exact place where the photo was taken is unknown, but for that reason, I tried jumping in all possible locations where he might have been, hoping that, for a moment, my body could overlap with the place where he once sat.
